Reddit is going mostly logged-in as AI search eats its Google traffic

Reddit says Google is sending it far fewer visitors as AI answers take the clicks. So it's putting most of the site behind a login, starting with tests outside the US.

TL;DR

Is Reddit going to require a login?

Reddit said it will become a mostly logged-in site, starting with tests outside the US. If you market on Reddit or count on Reddit threads showing up in Google, expect less casual reach. Nothing to change today, but start building places you own, like an email list.

What did Reddit announce?

Reddit shared the plan with its third-quarter results on October 29, 2026. It said it will become a "primarily logged-in experience," with the first tests running outside the US this quarter. There's no US date yet.

CEO Steve Huffman told Axios the change is about better personalization, better ads and stopping bots from scraping Reddit's posts. Reddit said search referral traffic, meaning visitors who arrive from search engines like Google, was "down meaningfully in Q3." On the earnings call, the company said October search referrals fell by more than 1 million a week on average, as reported by Axios and TechCrunch.

What will still work without logging in?

Not everything closes. Per Reddit and Axios:

  • The homepage stays visible to logged-out visitors.
  • Pages people reach from a search result or a shared link stay visible.
  • Commenting and voting already need an account, and that doesn't change.
  • A read-only incognito mode is coming back to the app.

Reddit also said it hasn't decided exactly where the line between logged-in and logged-out pages will fall. So the details can still move.

Why is Reddit doing this now?

AI answers are taking clicks that used to go to Reddit threads. For years, people added "reddit" to a Google search to find real opinions. Now Google's AI Overviews and chatbots often give a summary instead, and fewer people click through.

The numbers back that up. Reddit's daily active uniques (people who visit at least once a day) grew 12% to 130.3 million worldwide. But US daily uniques slipped to 50.7 million from 51.6 million a year earlier, and US logged-out daily uniques fell 4% to 27.3 million.

Money isn't the problem. Revenue jumped 53% to US$895 million, and ad revenue rose 54% to US$847 million. COO Jen Wong told Axios that logged-in users engage about five times more than logged-out ones. Reddit is betting that fewer, signed-in visitors are worth more than a crowd of drive-by readers. It also warned that daily users could fall by a "low-double-digit percentage" in the fourth quarter if search trends hold, per Axios.

What does a Reddit login wall mean for small businesses and creators?

If people find you through Reddit, you'll feel this in two places.

Reach from Google. A helpful thread that mentions your shop or product has been a steady source of visitors from search. If fewer of those pages show to logged-out readers, or Google and AI tools see less of them, that free traffic shrinks.

AI answers. Chatbots that don't have a data deal with Reddit may be able to read and cite it less. That makes Reddit a less reliable way for small brands to show up in AI answers. Reddit's "other revenue," which includes data licensing to AI companies, grew 35% to US$48 million, so the companies that pay will keep their access.

The people already on Reddit aren't going anywhere. If your customers hang out in a subreddit, signed-in members are still your audience there, and they're the ones who comment and buy.

Our take

This is the clearest sign yet that AI search is changing who gets visitors. Reddit was one of the biggest winners of Google's push to show "real people" in results. Now AI summaries skim those same threads, and Reddit is pulling up the drawbridge so its content earns money on its own terms.

For small businesses, the lesson is old but newly urgent: borrowed reach can disappear with one earnings call. Keep showing up in the subreddits your customers use, as a helpful member, and send the people who like you to something you own, like an email list or your own site.

What to do this week

  1. Check your analytics for visits from reddit.com and save this month's number, so you can spot a drop once the tests reach your area.
  2. Make sure your brand has a real Reddit account in good standing, since posting and replying need one anyway.
  3. Give Reddit fans a next step. Point them to your newsletter or site when it genuinely helps the thread.
  4. Don't build a plan on Reddit threads ranking in Google. Treat that traffic as a bonus.
  5. Readers who use "reddit" in searches: nothing changes yet, but a free account will likely be the easiest way to keep reading later.

FAQ

Will I need an account to read Reddit in the US?

Not yet. Reddit is starting outside the US first and hasn't given a US date. It also hasn't decided which pages will stay open.

Can I still find Reddit threads through Google?

Yes for now. Reddit says pages reached from search and shared links stay visible to logged-out visitors.

Why does Reddit want people logged in?

Huffman told Axios it's about personalization, ads and stopping bots from scraping. Logged-in users also engage about five times more, per Reddit's COO.

Does this affect ChatGPT and Google's AI answers?

Possibly. AI companies with a data deal keep access through licensing. Tools without one may find it harder to read Reddit, so they could cite it less.
