Microsoft's MAI Image 2.7 is a top-3 AI image editor, and you can try it free

Microsoft's newest image model fixes text inside pictures, relights scenes and restores old graphics. It's free while in preview, and it ranks near the top of the two big leaderboards.

TL;DR

What is MAI Image 2.7?

Microsoft released a free preview of MAI Image 2.7, a new AI tool that edits photos and graphics. You can try a top-ranked editor for text, light and old photos without paying. Test it on one image you already edit, but wait for usage terms before you use it in paid work.

What happened

Microsoft AI, the company's in-house AI lab, released MAI Image 2.7 as a preview on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. It's an image-editing model, so its main job is changing pictures you already have rather than dreaming up new ones from scratch. It replaces MAI Image 2.6, which came out in August.

Microsoft lists three headline jobs: restyle or relight a whole scene, change text and symbols so they still look like part of the image, and restore or enhance existing assets such as old photos and logos. The company also says it handles edits that need a sense of how objects, lighting and surroundings fit together, such as moving a product into a new setting.

How good is MAI Image 2.7 at editing images?

Two public leaderboards ranked it on day one. Both are run by outside sites, though neither is a hands-on review.

Arena ranks models by people voting between two results side by side. Artificial Analysis uses an Elo score, the same kind of rating chess uses, where higher means it wins more head-to-head comparisons. Rankings as of October 27, 2026.

Microsoft says 2.7 beats 2.6 on all 10 use cases and all 7 editing actions Artificial Analysis measures. Its biggest lead is in scene and style edits, where Microsoft says it scores 24 Elo ahead of the next-best model.

Where can I try MAI Image 2.7 for free?

The preview is free to try in three places: Microsoft's own MAI Playground, the Arena site and the Artificial Analysis site. There's no paid plan, no API (the connection developers use to plug a model into their own apps) and no price yet. So you can play with it in a browser today, but you can't build it into a shop or an app.

Can I use MAI Image 2.7 images for my business?

Not with confidence yet. Microsoft hasn't published commercial-use terms for the preview. Until it does, use it to test ideas and mockups, and keep producing client work and product listings with a tool whose terms you already know. If you need something for paid work today, our photo editing tools guide lists options with clear plans.

Our take

Fixing text inside an image is the edit that has burned most of us. Ask an AI to change "SALE" to "NEW" on a product photo and you often get a word that looks like it melted. If MAI Image 2.7 really handles text and lighting this well, it saves small sellers a lot of fiddly redo work.

Still, a leaderboard win comes from strangers voting on test prompts, and your photos aren't test prompts. Free is the right price for finding out. Try it on the three edits you do most, compare it with the tool you pay for now, and keep your subscription until Microsoft says what the preview will cost and how you're allowed to use the results.

What to do this week

  1. Pick one real image you edit often, like a product shot with a label or a banner with a date on it, and run the same edit in MAI Image 2.7 and your current tool.
  2. Test text editing first. Change a word or price inside an image and zoom in on the result. That's where most AI editors still slip.
  3. Sellers with old product photos: try relighting one dull shot to match newer ones, and check that the product itself didn't change shape or color.
  4. Don't upload anything private. Previews on public test sites aren't the place for client files or unreleased products.
  5. Hold off on paid work until Microsoft publishes usage terms. Our image generation guide covers tools with clear plans in the meantime.

FAQ

Microsoft's announcement names MAI Playground, Arena and Artificial Analysis as the places to try the preview. It doesn't say when or whether it will reach Copilot or other Microsoft apps.

How is MAI Image 2.7 different from MAI Image 2.6?

It scores 45 points higher on Arena's image-edit board, and Microsoft says it improves on 2.6 in every use case and editing action Artificial Analysis measures. Version 2.6 came out in August 2026.
