TL;DR
What is the Claude Ultra plan?
Ultra is the new name for Claude's US$200-a-month Max 20x plan. Verified Ultra accounts no longer have a 5-hour limit, only a weekly one, so long jobs stop getting cut off mid-task. On the US$100 plan? Only the name changed. Check which limit you actually hit before you upgrade.
What did Anthropic change?
On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed its Claude Max plans in a post on X at about 1:29pm ET. Max 5x is now just "Max," and Max 20x is now "Ultra." Prices stay the same, and subscribers don't need to do anything. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically.
The same post removed the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, "starting today with most existing subscribers." The 5-hour limit is the usage cap that resets every five hours, so a long session could stop halfway even with plenty of your week left. Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until Anthropic verifies them, which it says helps prevent fraud and abuse. You'll get an email when the limit comes off. Weekly limits stay as they were.
Claude Max vs Ultra: what's the difference now?
| Max | Ultra | |
|---|---|---|
| Old name | Max 5x | Max 20x |
| Price (web) | US$100/month | US$200/month |
| Usage every five hours | 5x Pro | No 5-hour limit (verified accounts) |
| Usage every week | 5x Pro | 10x Pro |
| Weekly limits | All models, plus a separate one for Fable | All models, plus a separate one for Fable |
| Billing | Monthly only | Monthly only |
| Monthly Claude API credits | Included | Included |
The weekly numbers explain the rename. Ultra's weekly cap is 10x Pro, and Anthropic says weekly limits are unchanged, so the "20x" only ever described the 5-hour limit. With that limit gone on Ultra, the old name stopped making sense. The weekly math is now simple: US$200 buys twice the weekly usage of US$100.
Is Claude Ultra unlimited?
No. Ultra still has a weekly limit across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable. Anthropic also says it may add other caps, such as monthly limits or limits on certain models and features, to manage capacity. What's gone is the mid-session stop, so a long report, a big spreadsheet job or a background task in Claude can keep running until the weekly budget runs out.
Who should upgrade from Max to Ultra?
It depends on which wall you hit. If your Max work keeps stopping at the 5-hour mark while your weekly bar still has room, Ultra now fixes that directly. If you run out of weekly usage first, Ultra gives you twice the weekly room for twice the price, the same deal as before the rename.
For a solo creator or small team that uses Claude a few times a day, Max is still plenty, and nothing about it changed. If you're weighing a cheaper route, compare Claude Pro alternatives or see how Claude stacks up against other AI chatbots.
X reactions
Anthropic's own post sums up the change, and at least one subscriber found the email version harder to follow.
To answer Kyle's question: on Ultra it's a real change if the 5-hour limit was your problem. On Max, it's a label change.
Our take
This is a good change for the people it touches. Nothing kills a long Claude job like a cutoff at hour four with most of your week still unused, and planning around one weekly number is far easier than juggling two. Credit to Anthropic for fixing the name too, since "20x" made plenty of people think they were getting twice the weekly usage they actually had.
It's still a US$200 plan, though, and the weekly limit didn't move. Before you upgrade, spend a week watching Settings > Usage. If the 5-hour bar is what stops you, Ultra is now an easy call. If the weekly bar fills first, you're paying double for double, which only makes sense if Claude is doing real paid work for you.

What should I do now?
- Open Settings > Usage and note which bar fills first on a busy day: the 5-hour one or the weekly one.
- Already on Ultra? Watch for Anthropic's email saying your 5-hour limit is off. It's reaching most existing subscribers first, and newer accounts wait until they're verified.
- On Max and only hitting the weekly limit? Stay put. Ultra just doubles the weekly room at double the price.
- Split big jobs across the week so one heavy day doesn't use up the whole weekly budget.
FAQ
Do I need to do anything if I was on Max 20x?
No. Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically at the same US$200 a month.
Did the Claude Max plan price change?
No. Max is still US$100 a month on the web, and Ultra is still US$200. Mobile prices may differ by app store.
Why do I still have a 5-hour limit on Ultra?
The change is rolling out to most existing subscribers first, and newer accounts keep a temporary limit until Anthropic verifies them. Anthropic says you'll get an email when it's removed.
Can I pay for Claude Ultra yearly?
Not right now. Both Max and Ultra are monthly subscriptions only.
