TL;DR
What did Anthropic add to Claude for legal work?
Anthropic added ready-made legal tools to Claude, such as contract tables and citation checkers. If you handle contracts, you can start from a working example instead of a blank chat. Try one on a contract you already know well, and have a lawyer check anything you plan to sign or send.
What are Claude's new legal artifacts?
On October 28, 2026, Anthropic added a gallery of legal artifacts to Claude for Legal. Artifacts are small interactive tools, like trackers, tables and dashboards, that you build and share inside Claude. Each one opens with a worked example, so you can see the finished result before adding your own documents. Anthropic says every answer or output links to its source.
The built-in set covers six jobs:
| Artifact | What Anthropic says it does |
|---|---|
| Cite check | Compares a legal document with its sources and flags quotes that don't match, wrong page numbers and sources that don't back the claim |
| Jurisdiction survey matrix | Compares one legal topic, such as data breach notice rules, across states or countries in a single table |
| Matter board | Turns engagement letters, emails or spreadsheets into one board of open matters with owners, next steps and deadlines |
| Playbook deviation board | Compares contracts with your standard terms and flags each clause that differs |
| Regulatory horizon scan | Puts upcoming rules on a timeline based on where your business operates, ranked by impact |
| Tabular review | Builds a table from a stack of contracts showing the terms you ask about, like non-competes, with links to the exact wording |
Law firms and legal tech companies built some of the others. Goodwin made an AI Governance Benchmark, Harvey made an intake tool for legal requests, Foley & Lardner made an Obligations Checker, and PwC made a Subpoena Response Tool. Anthropic says more are coming from Legora and Orrick.
Can a small business use Claude's legal tools?
The gallery is aimed at legal teams, but the tasks are familiar to anyone who signs contracts. A freelancer with a pile of client agreements could use the tabular review to see every payment term and notice period in one place. A small agency could compare a new client contract with its usual terms using the playbook deviation board.
Treat every result as a first draft for a lawyer. Anthropic describes the workflow the same way: you bring the documents, "Claude completes the first pass, and a lawyer applies their judgment to the results." The source links make that check faster, since you can click through to the exact clause or citation. They don't replace reading it.
Anthropic also says it has added more than 60 legal connectors since Claude for Legal launched in May, including Bloomberg Law and Filevine. Connectors are links that let Claude pull in files and data from other apps, so you don't have to upload documents by hand. The gallery also includes nine access-to-justice artifacts, five of them built by nonprofits that Anthropic supported with Claude credits, such as a rent ledger reviewer for eviction cases based on D.C. law.
What are Claude Enterprise smart reports and pooled budgets?
The second announcement is for companies on Claude Enterprise only, so most solo creators won't see it. Three admin tools are now generally available:
- Smart reports. An admin picks a team and a date range, and Claude reviews a sample of that team's chats and sorts the work into workstreams, the main kinds of tasks people use it for. Each report shows the spend, what got produced and common sticking points, like a missing connector. Anthropic says the reports aren't meant for judging individual performance or making employment decisions.
- In-app surveys. Short question cards that appear after a Claude reply, asking things like which use of Claude a teammate should copy.
- Pooled group budgets. One shared monthly budget per team, with individual limits still in place. Admins with billing access get email alerts at 50%, 75%, 95% and 100% of the budget.
The timing makes sense. TechCrunch, citing data from Jellyfish, reports that spending on agentic coding tools is up 10 times this year. Companies want to know what that money buys.

Our take
Starting from a finished example beats staring at an empty chat box, especially for people who don't know what to ask. A contract table you can see working is far easier to trust, and to question, than a prompt you wrote at midnight. The source links are the best part of the design, because they make checking the work quick.
The risk is that a tidy table looks more certain than it is. A missed clause in a lease or a client contract costs real money. Use these tools to find things faster, then put the important ones in front of a lawyer. For the spend reports, we'd love to see the pooled budgets and alerts come to smaller plans too, since small teams feel a surprise AI bill the most.

What to do this week
- Open the legal gallery in Claude and look at the built-in example for the tabular review or matter board before you add any files.
- Try it on a contract you already know well. Check whether it finds the terms you know are there.
- Click the source links on anything important and read the original wording yourself.
- Keep confidential client files out until you've checked your plan's data settings and your client agreements.
- Set a spending limit on whatever AI tool your team pays for. Our guide to capping your AI bill walks through the basics.
FAQ
Do I need a paid Claude plan for the legal artifacts?
Anthropic's announcement says legal teams can browse the gallery in Claude, but it doesn't list which plans include it. Check the gallery page or Claude for Legal page from your own account. The smart reports, surveys and pooled budgets are Claude Enterprise only.
Which Claude model runs the legal artifacts?
The announcement doesn't name one. Partner quotes on the page mention Claude Opus 5.5, but Anthropic doesn't say the gallery requires a specific model.
Can I share a Claude legal artifact with a client?
Anthropic says artifacts can be shared with colleagues, clients and partners, with sharing settings meant to protect privacy and keep teams separated where needed. Check what your firm or client contract allows first.
How do I join Anthropic's Legal Ambassadors Program?
Anthropic launched it as a community for legal professionals who build with Claude. There's a waitlist linked from the announcement.
