TL;DR
What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a research-preview app from Anthropic, announced on October 21, 2026, that makes Claude a proactive assistant. It reads the apps you connect, sends a morning brief, flags what needs you and works on tasks in the background. It asks before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything. It's waitlist-only for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, at no extra cost during the preview, and isn't available on Team or Enterprise plans yet.
What happened
On October 21, 2026, Anthropic announced Claude Duet, a research preview that turns Claude from a chatbot you have to ask into an assistant that checks in with you first. It's a standalone app for iOS and Android and also works on claude.ai, and it runs on Claude Opus 5.5 (there's no model picker).
Instead of waiting for a prompt, Duet looks through the apps you connect every few hours, sends you a morning brief and messages you when something needs you. Then it gets on with the work in the background.
What Claude Duet does
- Morning brief: a daily summary of what's waiting across your connected apps.
- Check-ins: every few hours it looks for anything urgent and messages you.
- One conversation: you talk to it in a single thread, typed or by voice, with separate channels for ongoing topics.
- Tasks and results: a Tasks tab shows what it's working on, finished work lands in the Make tab, and only you can mark a task complete.
- Background work: it runs on its own cloud computer with its own browser, so work carries on while your phone is in your pocket. You can't watch it work or take over mid-task.
- Your Claude setup comes along: memory, skills and connectors carry over from your Claude account.
- 6,000+ connectors: including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign, Calendly, Gusto, Canva and Shopify. Microsoft 365 isn't on the list yet.
- Buying things: it pays through Link or Shop Pay using a one-time card number for each purchase. 1Password logins are on the way.

What it asks first, and what it won't do
Duet asks for your approval before it:
- sends a message (including any email),
- makes a payment,
- signs a document,
- deletes anything.
If you can't approve straight away, it finishes the rest of the task and brings the approval back to you later.
It never: trades stocks or other securities, moves money between accounts, or gets into someone else's account.
It can't (yet): make phone calls or send texts, see files on your own computer, or change your work in Claude (it can read it).
Privacy guardrails: Duet never sees your passwords or login tokens. A classifier blocks it from sharing card numbers and government ID numbers, and it only passes on health or financial details when you explicitly tell it to. It also has defenses against prompt injection.
Anthropic says Duet "might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent", and that it's weaker at personal errands like booking tickets than at work tasks.

| Research preview | An early version released to a limited group so the company can learn before a full launch. |
| AI agent | Software that doesn't just answer questions but carries out tasks for you, step by step. |
| Proactive | It starts the conversation, instead of waiting for you to type. |
| Connector | A link that lets the AI read from, or act in, another app such as Gmail or QuickBooks. |
| Cloud computer (virtual machine) | A computer in a data center that the agent uses, so the work doesn't run on your phone. |

| Prompt injection | A trick where text hidden in an email or web page tries to give the AI its own orders. |
| Usage limits | The amount of Claude you can use in a set window (here, every 5 hours and every week) before you have to wait. |

X reactions
Claude's official account announced Duet on X, and Canva was quick to point out that its connector already works inside it.
Our take
"Proactive" is both the feature and the risk. A morning brief that really reads your inbox could save a one-person business a good chunk of every morning. But an assistant working in the background is only as good as the limits you give it.
Duet's approval list is the right default: messages, payments, signatures and deletions all wait for you. The bigger question is how many approval pings you'll put up with before you start tapping "yes" without reading. (That's the subject of our Nerdy View on approval fatigue.)
If you already pay for Claude in the US, join the waitlist. Connect one low-stakes app first (your calendar, not your bank), and give it two weeks before it goes near your customers.

What to do this week
- Paying for Claude Pro or Max in the US? Join the waitlist from the Claude Duet page.
- Write down the three jobs that eat your mornings. That's your first brief for Duet.
- Decide your own "always ask me" list before you connect anything. Duet already asks before messages, payments, signatures and deletions; add anything else that matters to your business, like price changes.
- Not in the US, or on a Team plan? Nothing here is urgent. Watch how the preview goes.
FAQ
Is Claude Duet free?
There's no extra charge during the research preview, but you need a Claude Pro or Max plan in the US. Duet uses your plan's 5-hour and weekly limits, and its background check-ins count toward them. Claude Pro costs US$20/month, or US$17/month billed annually (checked Oct 25, 2026).
What does Claude Duet ask permission for?
It asks before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything. It never trades securities, moves money between accounts or accesses someone else's account.
Can I use Claude Duet on a Team or Enterprise plan?
Not yet. The preview is for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US.
How do I join the Claude Duet waitlist?
Go to the Claude Duet page on claude.com, choose Join the waitlist, enter your name and Claude account email, pick your plan and phone type, and submit. Invites arrive by email in waves.
How is Claude Duet different from normal Claude chat?
Normal chat waits for you to type. Duet checks your connected apps every few hours, sends a morning brief and keeps working on tasks in the background on its own cloud computer.
What are the alternatives to Claude Duet?
OpenAI's dots (included with ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium) and Meta's Muse (free with a limit, or US$20 and US$100 a month for higher tiers) are the closest rivals.
