TL;DR
Is AI causing layoffs in 2026?
AI is part of the picture, and the official count says it's a big part. Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which tracks announced US job cuts, says employers cited AI in 120,136 cuts so far in 2026, about 21% of the 573,195 total and the No. 1 reason this year. Microsoft's new buyout offer, open to about 60,000 eligible employees according to CNBC, is voluntary, and Microsoft hasn't tied it to AI. It does land as Microsoft's quarterly spending on data centers and equipment tops US$50 billion. For small businesses, that could mean more experienced tech talent looking for work in January.
What Microsoft announced, in one paragraph
On Monday, October 26, 2026, Microsoft announced its first Voluntary Exit Offer for eligible employees in participating teams in the US, Canada, India and the UK. CNBC reports about 60,000 people are eligible. People who accept leave on December 31. We covered who's eligible and how the offer works in our news post, so here we'll focus on what the numbers around it say.
Is AI behind the Microsoft buyouts?
Microsoft's own post frames the offer as giving employees flexibility, and it gives no number. CNBC frames it as Microsoft balancing a huge AI data-center build-out against its costs. Nobody at Microsoft has said "AI did this."
What we can see is where the money is going. Microsoft said its September-quarter capital spending, the money it puts into data centers, chips and equipment, should top US$50 billion. A year earlier it was US$34.9 billion, according to CNBC.
Buyouts aren't layoffs. People choose whether to take them, and some Microsoft teams aren't taking part. But the money is moving from people to chips, and a company that's spending that much on hardware has a reason to look hard at its payroll.
Watch where a company spends, and you'll see its plans before it announces them.
What the layoff data actually says about AI
Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement firm, counts the job cuts US employers announce each month and the reasons they give. Its September 2026 report, released October 1, shows AI near the top of the list.
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Announced US job cuts, September 2026 | 43,281 | Challenger |
| Cuts citing AI, September 2026 | 3,961 (about 9%, fifth-most-cited reason) | Challenger |
| Announced US job cuts, Jan–Sept 2026 | 573,195 | Challenger |
| Cuts citing AI, Jan–Sept 2026 | 120,136 (about 21%, No. 1 reason this year) | Challenger |
| Microsoft capital spending, September quarter 2026 | More than US$50 billion (company estimate) | CNBC |
| Microsoft capital spending, September quarter 2025 | US$34.9 billion | CNBC |
| Microsoft employees eligible for buyouts | About 60,000 of 223,000 (about 27%) | CNBC, citing a person familiar |
Two things stand out. Across the year, AI is the reason employers name most often. In September alone it slipped to fifth. One month doesn't make a trend, but it's a reminder to watch the yearly total and the monthly count together. Yesterday's View covered the hiring side of the same report, which is where things look softer.
What people on X are saying
The reaction on X jumped straight to what comes next. These are opinions, not reporting. Amanda Goodall, who writes about tech job cuts, wondered whether this is a warm-up for layoffs:
$MSFT offers 60,000 employees a voluntary exit.

60K Y’all!!
First time this has ever been offered at Microsoft and it will affect employees in India, The United States, Canada, and the UK at level 70 or below…
Employees find out in a few hours if they are being targeted for this.
This just makes me think that H127 layoffs sound intense. Is this a pre-layoff round?
Also makes me wonder if they changed some scheduled layoffs due to be called out by @VP. Peace offering? 🤔 Timing is just interesting.
More to come.
The account LayoffHedge put it more bluntly:
Pretty much - take it, or get laid off next round.
— LayoffHedge (@LayoffAI) October 26, 2026
Neither post is evidence of future layoffs. They do show how employees and watchers read voluntary offers: as a signal.
What the Microsoft buyouts mean for workers and small businesses
If you're offered a buyout anywhere, read the whole offer before you react to the headlines. Note the deadline, what you get paid and when, and what happens to health coverage and unvested stock. At Microsoft, employees decide in early December and leave on December 31, so the calendar is tight.
If you run a small business, January could be a good month to hire. Experienced people with big-company skills in engineering, sales, marketing and operations may be looking for freelance or contract work. A café chain that needs a better ordering system, or a three-person agency that needs a part-time project manager, might find senior help that was out of reach a year ago.
If you freelance, expect more competition from that same talent pool. It's a good week to update your portfolio (our website builder picks make that quick) and ask happy clients for a short review.
The dates to watch next
| Date | What | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Wed, Oct 28, 2026 | Microsoft quarterly results | Final capital spending number and any comment on headcount |
| Early December 2026 | Microsoft employees' buyout decision deadline | How many accept, if Microsoft says |
| Fri, Nov 6, 2026 | BLS Employment Situation (jobs report), October | Overall job growth and unemployment |
Challenger's October report should land in early November too. If AI's share of cuts climbs back up, this story gets bigger.
