TL;DR

What did arjie use Claude Code for?

A small business owner keeps their accounts as plain-text Beancount files, gives Claude Code a read-only bank connection and their synced email, and lets it keep the books current. They then worked through a complicated tax return with Claude Code advising. They called the result pretty good. The return was reviewed, and the only error was a small allocation issue that the tax office flagged and they paid. They preferred working step by step with the agent over handing everything to an accountant at once, and plan to do the same next year.

What they did

They keep their books in a folder of Beancount files. Claude Code has command-line access to their Mercury business bank account through a read-only token, and their email is synced into the same setup over IMAP. Claude Code ties these together to keep the accounts up to date. At year end, they used the records for the business tax return and their own, entering everything in tax software while asking Claude Code questions as they went.

How it went

They called the result pretty good. The return was reviewed, and the only error was a small allocation issue that the tax office flagged and they paid. They preferred working step by step with the agent over handing everything to an accountant at once, and plan to do the same next year.

Worth knowing

  • They admit an accountant and tax lawyer could have prevented most of the issues. The bank token is read-only, so the agent can't move money. This suits someone comfortable with plain-text files and a terminal.
  • Price check: Claude: free plan; Pro: US$20/month, or US$17/month on a yearly plan (US$200/year) (checked Nov 1, 2026).
