TL;DR
What's the cheapest alternative to Descript?
For a lot of people it's Descript's own free plan: 60 media minutes a month, 720p export and 5 GB of storage. If you need more, VEED Creator is the cheapest paid step at US$12.25/month billed yearly (US$147/year), against US$192/year for Descript Hobbyist. OpusClip and CapCut have free plans too, and OpusClip is built for cutting long videos into short clips. Prices are US$ before tax. Price checked Oct 25, 2026.
What Descript costs right now
Descript Hobbyist is US$24/month billed monthly, or US$16/month billed yearly (US$192/year), before tax. Creator is US$35/month, or US$24/month billed yearly. Business is US$65/month, or US$50/month billed yearly. Descript says yearly billing saves up to 35%. Price checked Oct 25, 2026.
Descript edits video and audio by editing the transcript, like a document. If that's how you cut podcasts and interviews, keep in mind it's the only tool on this page that works that way. If you mostly turn long videos into social clips, or you only edit now and then, a free plan or a cheaper tool may do the job. A plan you open twice a month is a subscription in name only.
Cheaper doesn't always mean the same. Alternatives can differ in features and quality, so try the free plan before you switch.
