Google AI Pro vs ChatGPT Plus: which US$20 plan should you pay for?

Same price, very different bundles. Google sells an AI plan with a pile of storage and extras attached. OpenAI sells the chatbot most people already know.

TL;DR

Should I get Google AI Pro or ChatGPT Plus?

Pick Google AI Pro (US$19.99 a month) if you live in Gmail and Docs, want 5 TB of storage, or share with family. Pick ChatGPT Plus (US$20 a month) if you mainly want a strong chat assistant for writing, research and longer tasks. US college students can get Google AI Pro free for a year.

What's the difference between Google AI Pro and ChatGPT Plus?

On price, it's a penny. Google AI Pro is US$19.99 a month and ChatGPT Plus is US$20 a month (both before tax, checked November 1, 2026). The real difference is what comes in the box.

Google AI Pro is a bundle. You get Gemini's Pro-level models with four times the free plan's usage limits, plus 5 TB of Google storage, Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets, auto browse in Chrome, 1,000 Google Flow credits a month for video, YouTube Premium Lite, and US$10 a month in Google Cloud credits. You can also share the plan with up to five other people.

ChatGPT Plus is one product done deep. You get OpenAI's GPT-6 reasoning models, more messages and uploads than Free, deep research, Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, more Codex for coding, and ChatGPT Work (OpenAI's mode for longer, multi-step jobs) on desktop, web and mobile. No storage, no family sharing, no extra subscriptions tucked in.

So the question to ask yourself is less "which AI is smarter" and more "which extras would I actually use."

Who should pick Google AI Pro?

If you already pay Google for storage, Google AI Pro can be the easy win. That 5 TB alone covers a lot of photo backups, and the AI rides along. It also makes sense if your work happens in Gmail and Docs, because Gemini sits right inside them instead of in a separate tab.

Families get the best deal here. One plan shared with up to five others spreads that US$19.99 a long way. The fine print: the plan is 18+ and needs a personal Google Account, so a work account won't do.

Who should pick ChatGPT Plus?

If you want the AI to be the main event, Plus is the more focused pick. It's built around chat, research and getting longer jobs done, and ChatGPT Work runs on your phone and the web as well as the desktop app. Custom GPTs and scheduled tasks are handy if you repeat the same jobs every week.

Plus is monthly only. OpenAI says it doesn't offer annual billing or paying for several months up front, so there's no yearly discount to chase. The upside is that you can cancel any month.

If you only need everyday chat, ChatGPT Go is US$8 a month in the US, so compare ChatGPT Go vs Plus before you pay for Plus.

How does Claude Pro compare?

Claude Pro is the third US$20 option, and it comes with a clear yearly discount. It's US$20 a month billed monthly, or US$200 a year paid up front (about US$17 a month).

Pro gets at least five times the free plan's usage per five-hour session, plus Claude Code, Research, Projects, Anthropic's Opus models, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Like ChatGPT Plus, it's an assistant first, with no storage bundle. Anthropic renamed its bigger plans on October 30, 2026: Max 5x is now Max (US$100 a month) and Max 20x is now Ultra (US$200 a month), at the same prices.
