TL;DR

Should I get ChatGPT Go or Plus?

Pick Go (US$8 a month) if you mostly chat, write and ask questions. Pick Plus (US$20 a month) if you want ChatGPT to do longer tasks for you on your phone or the web, or want OpenAI's newest models. Not sure? Try Go for a month first. Both bill monthly, so no yearly lock-in.

What's the difference between ChatGPT Go and Plus?

Go is the budget paid plan. Plus is the one most people mean when they say "I pay for ChatGPT." Both sit between the free plan and the Pro plans, and both bill month to month with no yearly discount.

The biggest gap is ChatGPT Work, the part of ChatGPT that handles longer, multi-step jobs for you. On Go, you get limited access, and only in the ChatGPT desktop app. On Plus, you get it on desktop, the web and mobile.

Plus also gets new models first. When OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26, 2026, it listed Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu as the plans getting it. Go wasn't on that list.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth it over Go?

It comes down to how you use it. If ChatGPT is your writing buddy for emails, captions and product blurbs, Go covers that, and the US$144 a year you keep is real money for a small business.

Plus earns its price when you hand ChatGPT bigger jobs, like research across many pages or a multi-step task, and you want to start them from your phone between clients. It also makes sense if you want new models the day they land instead of waiting.

A simple check: for one week, note every time you wished ChatGPT could just do the whole task for you. A long list says Plus. A short one says Go.

Who should stay on the free plan?

If you use ChatGPT a few times a week, start free. The free plan includes the built-in browser and limited ChatGPT Work access in the desktop app, with lighter access to the latest models and tools. Upgrade only when you keep hitting a wall. Already paying and want something cheaper outside OpenAI? See our ChatGPT Plus alternatives.

What about ChatGPT Pro?

Pro is for people who live in ChatGPT all day. It now comes in three monthly tiers: Pro 100 at US$100, Pro 200 at US$200 and Pro 500 at US$500 a month. Like Go and Plus, none of them have yearly billing. For most solo creators and small teams, that's a lot of coffee money, and Plus or Go will do.

Any ChatGPT discounts?

Not for individual plans. OpenAI offers yearly billing only on Business and Enterprise. Two groups do get a break: verified US K-12 teachers get ChatGPT for Teachers free through June 2027, and nonprofits can get up to 75% off Business and Enterprise.
