TL;DR

What did u/Lost-Try-9348 use NotebookLM for?

Studying for a finance licensing exam, a Reddit user loaded each chapter of the study manual into NotebookLM as its own source, used one prompt to get long, thorough audio overviews, then made quizzes and slides chapter by chapter. They say the prompt gives audio overviews of 60 to 90 minutes, and that from there "it was easy to generate chapter-specific quizzes and slide decks." In a later thread they add that uploading the whole book as one file gives weaker results.

What they did

They work in finance and were studying for the Series 7 exam. They broke the study manual into chapters and added each chapter to NotebookLM as a separate source. For each chapter they generated an audio overview with this prompt: "Be as thorough as possible, I need to become a subject matter expert in preparation for a test. Disregard duration limits and focus on covering everything." They used each audio overview as an introduction to the topic, then generated quizzes and slide decks for each chapter to lock in what they learned.

How it went

They say the prompt gives audio overviews of 60 to 90 minutes, and that from there "it was easy to generate chapter-specific quizzes and slide decks." In a later thread they add that uploading the whole book as one file gives weaker results.

Worth knowing

  • After a few episodes, the podcast format starts to feel repetitive. Use it to supplement the manual, not replace it.

Try it yourself

Paste this into a chatbot, then add your own details underneath.

Using only this chapter, be as thorough as possible: I need to become an expert on it for a test. Cover every key term, rule and example, and don't worry about length. Then make a 15-question quiz on the chapter with answers and a one-line explanation for each.
