Parent cooking for seven plans almost every dinner from a ChatGPT project that knows their pantry

THEIR CLAIM

Monthly food costs more than halved

TL;DR

What did u/mcburgs use ChatGPT for?

A parent tells ChatGPT what's thawed, what's in the fridge and when dinner must be ready, and gets a full cooking plan. A project holding their pantry list and a cooking guide it researched now runs nearly every family dinner. They say they waste less food, cook much better and have lost 70 pounds since the previous September, and their monthly food costs dropped by more than half.

What they did

It started with telling ChatGPT what meat was thawed, which vegetables needed using and what time dinner had to be ready, then asking what to make. They built a ChatGPT project with several files: a stock list of what's in the pantry and which jars are open, and a 70-plus page cooking guide that an agent researched for them, including a pass using only Chinese-language sources. Most nights they type something like the ingredients on hand, one sauce they've never used and a dinner time. ChatGPT returns measurements, timing, sauce ratios, prep order, substitutions and fixes. It also plans their own lighter plate inside the same family meal. In the shop, they photograph unfamiliar labels and ask what the product is for.

How it went

They say they waste less food, cook much better and have lost 70 pounds since the previous September, and their monthly food costs dropped by more than half.

"My monthly food costs have cratered - $3200 CAD before I started this project, under $1500 now, reliably."

Worth knowing

  • They say it isn't flawless and dishes are sometimes adaptations rather than traditional recipes. A commenter warns it can also make you spend more if you follow every suggestion.

Try it yourself

Paste this into a chatbot, then add your own details underneath.

Here's what I have: [meat that's thawed, vegetables, sauces]. Dinner needs to be ready by [time] for [number] people, and [any diet needs]. Give me one dinner that uses up what's going off first, with measurements, a step-by-step prep order with times, and what to do if something goes wrong. Don't add ingredients I didn't list unless you mark them optional.
