TL;DR

What did Alex McFarland use Claude Cowork for?

A newsletter writer and ghostwriter runs a voice-creation skill in Claude Cowork that interviews them and studies writing samples, then saves a voice profile skill that every other writing task calls first. The interview takes about 15 to 20 minutes and ends with a voice profile skill they call before any production writing for themselves or clients.

What they did

They install a plugin of three skills in Claude Cowork: one creates a voice profile, one audits an existing profile for thin or missing areas, and one maintains it. When they run voice create, Claude asks whether the profile is for them, a client or a voice inspired by other creators, then takes writing samples (newsletters, YouTube transcripts, client posts, memos or a folder of files) plus notes such as "LinkedIn is more polished than the newsletter", and interviews them. The skill tells Claude to act like a character director, not a style-guide writer.

How it went

The interview takes about 15 to 20 minutes and ends with a voice profile skill they call before any production writing for themselves or clients.

Worth knowing

  • They warn against voice profiles written as a checklist of banned phrases, which they say makes writing sound monotonous. Cowork's option to act without asking was still in beta. The plugin is offered through their own Substack.
  • Price check: Claude: free plan; Pro: US$20/month, or US$17/month on a yearly plan (US$200/year) (checked Nov 1, 2026).

Act as a ghostwriter running a voice capture session. Study these writing samples and ask me questions one at a time about how I write and talk. Then write a voice profile that explains who I am, how I think, and how my writing sounds on each platform, as a character description rather than a list of rules: [samples]
