What you’re working toward

Create a readable Markdown copy of a Word document for inspection and later text analysis. Our synthetic meeting-notes file retained its body content, but lost the Word header and footer. Conversion alone does not establish that a downstream AI answer is accurate.

Who it’s for: Researchers and operations teams preparing Word documents for analysis, with help from someone comfortable installing Python tools. Experience: intermediate.

A practical way to start

  1. Choose a Word document you own or are authorized to process. Start with a harmless copy, and note any important text stored in its page header or footer.
  2. Use a separate Python environment. Our experiment used Python 3.12.14 and MarkItDown 0.1.8 with the docx extra; the linked evidence contains the exact dependencies and a reproducible synthetic example.
  3. Convert only the intended local file. We used MarkItDown(enable_plugins=False).convert_local(path), with no language-model client or cloud extraction service configured.
  4. Compare the output with the original: inspect headings, list items, every table row, numbers, dates and link destinations. In our sample these survived, but the Word header and footer were omitted.
  5. Restore missing context manually and record that correction. Retain the original file alongside the Markdown copy; do not treat readable output as proof of completeness.
  6. Only then consider using the text in an authorized analysis tool. Check confidentiality and any service costs before uploading; this experiment did not test AI answer quality.

Know the limits

  • This is one synthetic DOCX experiment, not a broad benchmark or a claim about every Word document.
  • Word page-header and page-footer text was omitted in our sample. Important context outside the document body needs a separate check.
  • PDFs, scanned pages, images, tracked changes, OCR and cloud extraction were not tested.
  • No model service was configured for this conversion. Optional cloud extraction or image-description services are separate and may incur charges.
  • Our network observation covers Python connection and DNS audit events during this configured conversion, not every possible native-library or third-party-plugin behavior.

Cost and alternatives

Check the tool profiles and current provider plans before starting. Model usage, hosting and optional connectors may have separate costs. Alternative tools need their own configuration and evaluation.
