The provider documents these capabilities. The steps below are an editorial way to evaluate them; we have not independently reproduced the result.
What you’re working toward
Open WebUI documents retrieval over uploaded documents, allowing you to ask questions alongside your own materials.
Who it’s for: Researchers and people organizing a document library. Experience: intermediate.
A practical way to start
- Deploy an authenticated workspace and configure a supported model backend.
- Upload a small non-sensitive document that you know well.
- Ask a question with a clearly identifiable answer and inspect the retrieved material.
- Compare the response with the original before applying it to unfamiliar documents.
Know the limits
- Retrieval can miss relevant passages; an answer is not proof that the entire library was searched.
- Model connections and external services determine where data goes.
- Scans and complex layouts may require additional extraction tools.
Cost and alternatives
Check the tool profiles and current provider plans before starting. Model usage, hosting and optional connectors may have separate costs. Alternative tools need their own configuration and evaluation.
