What changed
The October 16 release adds an opt-in shutdown behavior for n8n deployments that run workflows through a queue of worker processes. A worker is the process carrying out the workflow steps. According to the merged implementation notes, eligible production executions can pause after the current node finishes, save their progress and be queued for another worker to resume. The setting N8N_WORKER_SUSPEND_EXECUTIONS_ON_SHUTDOWN defaults to false, so installing this release alone does not enable it. The documented scope includes eligible webhook, trigger and retry executions. Manual and evaluation runs, streaming and MCP executions, and workflows with an enabled Chat Trigger are excluded. A webhook execution still waiting to return its response is also excluded until that response has been sent.
Why it matters
This is relevant to teams operating n8n workers during software updates or infrastructure maintenance: an eligible workflow may be able to continue on another worker instead of losing its progress when the original worker shuts down. It is not a guarantee that every workflow will survive a restart. Suspension happens between nodes; a node that runs longer than the graceful shutdown window can still be terminated. Before enabling the option, test a representative workflow in a separate environment, including slow steps and webhook responses, and check the resulting execution logs. The implementation also describes safeguards during rolling upgrades when an older main process is present. We checked the release and merged implementation notes; we have not independently run this feature, measured recovery time or established a reliability improvement.
Before you act
Read the original release notes and your version’s upgrade instructions. Test changes in a separate environment and keep a recovery path. This report does not verify every change in the release.
