ChatGPT’s interactive answers, explained

The October 7 announcement adds a new possibility: an answer you can explore, not just read.

Ask a question, get a paragraph, change a number, ask again. OpenAI’s October 7 announcement proposes a shorter loop: ChatGPT answers that can include diagrams, comparisons and small interactive tools. GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone

What is different about the answer

OpenAI describes a response format that can choose a useful mix of text, visuals and controls. Examples include side-by-side comparisons, interactive diagrams, calculators, bill splitters and games. A simple question can still receive a simple text answer. GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone

The company also says GPT-6 can begin answering while it continues to think or use tools, adding findings as it goes. Treat the first part as a developing answer: later information may matter before you act on it. GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone

Why a changing answer can be useful

Imagine planning a workshop and wondering how attendance changes the number of groups you need. A small control for headcount could make that relationship easier to explore. You would still need to decide the group size, check what happens with leftover people and make sure the result matches your plan.

The illustration shows a simple case: 12 people in groups of three fit neatly. With 13, someone is left over. A useful answer should expose that choice, not quietly hide it.

Who can use it

The October 7 release notes say rollout began globally for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise in the Chat tab, with Free and Go expansion starting the following day. Enterprise access depends on administrator settings. We have not verified that rollout on any particular account. ChatGPT release notes

The Pro subscription and the Pro reasoning setting are different things. Pro subscribers are included in the announced rollout. The reasoning setting called Pro does not support Intelligent UI; the notes list Instant through Extra High as supported. This update also leaves the models powering Work and Codex unchanged. Give it a small, checkable job

  1. Open an available Chat conversation

Check the settings available in your account. The announcement concerns the Chat tab, not a change to Work or Codex. ChatGPT release notes

Check: An eligible chat setting, if the rollout has reached your account.

  2. Ask for something you can calculate yourself

Try the prompt below with 12 people and a preferred team size of 3.

Check: Four teams, with the reasoning explained.

  3. Change one input

Try 13 people. Check that the extra person is shown and that the answer explains your options.

Check: A visible remainder and a decision for you to make.

A question to try

Show how to divide a workshop group into teams.
Let me change the number of people and the preferred team size.
Explain what happens when the numbers do not divide evenly.
Use a worked example I can check by hand.

Keep one caution in mind

A polished diagram can still contain a wrong answer. Check the numbers and assumptions before acting. If you get ordinary text, you can still ask for the same worked explanation; a missing control is not a reason to buy a different plan.
