Comparison

ChatGPT or Canva for a simple promotional graphic?

The first design is only half the job. Compare how you will change the date, keep the wording correct and produce a usable file—without assuming every AI feature is free.

For a workshop graphic you will update often, start with a layout that keeps the words editable. For an early visual idea, image generation may be useful. These tools approach the job differently; the choice starts with what you need to change. Images in ChatGPT Free Online Flyer Maker: Design Custom Flyers With Canva

A fictional workshop design shown as separate text layers and as one flat image. The editable date is a separate element; the flat image combines the date and artwork.

One brief, one change

The same job for both tools · fictional brief

Cedar Studio needs a square graphic for Start Your First Newsletter, a free online workshop on 3 November 2026 at 18:00 UTC. Keep it clear and readable on a phone, without real logos or faces.

Then change just the date to 10 November. Keep the title, time, colors and other wording the same.

The revision is the revealing part. The new date needs to be right, the other facts need to stay put, and the export needs to remain readable. A lovely background does not excuse inviting everyone on the wrong Tuesday.

Two ways to make the change

In ChatGPT, you can describe a new image or upload one and request edits. Its editor also lets you select an area. OpenAI warns that selections are not always precise and changes may extend beyond the highlighted area. After changing the date, inspect the whole graphic again. Images in ChatGPT

For the clearest documented free route in Canva, start with a blank layout and put the heading, date and time in separate text boxes. Keep those words out of a generated background. Then a date change means editing its text box. Canva documents a free editor and custom dimensions; check that the assets and export you choose are included. Canva also offers AI image generation and image edits. Those are different operations from typing into a text box. Importing a flat image does not, by itself, give you the original editable design. Do not assume that an advanced extraction or editing feature is included in your free allowance. Keep the budget visible

ChatGPT’s free tier has separate image-generation limits. Canva’s flyer page describes free customization, but its UK pricing table lists template customization as unavailable on Free. Because those pages conflict, we cannot promise free template editing. Use the blank layout route, check every asset’s label and confirm export availability in your account. Premium assets and AI tools have separate conditions; we have not checked either account’s allowance. If you hit a limit, save your brief and stop. You can still plan the layout and wording without generating another image. This comparison does not require a subscription, a paid API or a new account just to keep the example moving.

How to judge a trial you choose to run

Use the same fictional brief and correction in each available workflow. Keep the original and revised files. Check the title, date, time and spelling; compare the parts you asked to leave alone; then inspect the export at the size readers will see. Record the feature and plan you actually used.

If the facts change often, prioritize editable text. If you are exploring an early visual idea, prompted image generation may be useful. You can also combine them: make a background, then add the event details as text. Choose for the next correction as well as the first draft.
